Using our Intuition to Discover Symbolic Messages in Nature:
There is a renewing quality to the first days of spring. The flowers erupt from frozen ground and the birds chirp merrily. My heart is lifted and my sense of hope is ignited for a new season and all the possibilities which may unfold.
One day last spring, I embraced the sunshine by going on a much needed walk with a friend. As we started off, I looked back to my house and noticed the blue sky was transformed by a beautiful rainbow prism framing the sun. It was directly over my house and brought a feeling of warmth to both my friend and I. It felt like the Universe was offering us some much needed color and inspiration on that beautiful day. Winters in Atlantic Canada can feel never ending! So I offered up some gratitude to the heavens above and we continued on our way.
We took the scenic route, heading off with a light step towards the lake. Renewed by the fresh spring air. Along the way, something sparkled and shimmered on the path. Reaching down, my friend plucked something off the ground to examine further.
“Fool’s gold,” she noted with a smile.
It was a little square of glimmering gold. She remarked, “The kids love finding pyrite. This is much larger than the pieces we usually find.” With a grin she tucked it in her pocket to show them later.
Fool’s gold – I wondered who came up with that name? I was very well aware that it reflected the fact that even though this mineral shares gold’s luster, pyrite is worthless. In a monetary context that is.
Or was it?
My first thought was that my friend found value in it simply because it was pretty. But that’s the kind of person she is – kind hearted and always looking for the best in others. She inspired me, this friend of mine. So I thought, “I should look up the properties of pyrite.” I do believe everything around us has great symbolism if only we are willing to delve into possible meanings. The first result that came up on my internet search was, “Pyrite Healing Properties.”
Healing Crystals website had this to say about pyrite:
“Pyrite is a very protective stone, shielding the user from negative energy of all kinds. Pyrite blocks energy leaks and mends auric tears (holes in the aura). Carry pyrite in your pocket to protect you from both environmental pollution and physical danger. Pyrite also promotes good physical health and emotional well-being.”
Even more interesting!
Often when I encounter something in nature or I see a recurring number or pattern, I pause a moment to consider whether there is a message to be found. I enjoy looking up symbolism of <enter search item here> to see what results come back. It is truly fascinating. But I don’t take everything literally; instead I read a few articles and if it resonates, I consider the message in the context of my life and current experience. This works very well for me and I find value and meaning in such encounters. I believe it enriches my life and my perception of everyday things. There is often a message to be found, it is a very fascinating process.
So I found it very interesting that contrary to it’s common name, the mineral pyrite seemed to have some lovely metaphysical properties!
“So what was the message here?” I wondered.
And then I had an “aha” moment – a knowing. Intuitively, I knew the message of fool’s gold.
In my opinion, society overemphasizes attributes such as wealth and prestige to the detriment of creative and heart based ventures. Success is often narrowly defined as a function of an abundance of money with failure defined as a lack thereof. Let’s look beyond the surface of fool’s gold, shall we? Perhaps one message is that truly valuable things in life cannot be purchased with money. I realize that lack of money can create many hardships so it is wonderful to have an abundance of financial support but…
Perhaps it’s time to redefine a broader definition of success by asking ourselves some deeper questions:
Am I fulfilled on a soul level?
Do I feel safe and nurtured in my life?
When I look in the mirror, do I see beyond the physical appearance to who I really am at my deepest heart level? Do I like what I see in a loving and non-judgmental way?
Yes, I believe that was the message of “fool’s gold” that day!
It is time to stop telling ourselves that our spiritual and heart based needs are just “fool’s gold” and secondary to our financial needs based on the judgement of society…and ourselves. True abundance cannot be defined from a solely financial point of view.
Because that is selling our souls short.
And at the end of the day, when we look back on our lives, I think we will realize we were only “fooling” ourselves.
Thanks for walking beside me as we explore the symbolism and messages that nature has to offer.
